Howdy all, so whats the story with swapping tubes in the HT5,
thinking about trying a high gain JJ 12ax7,
is the HT5 self biasing like a Mesa?

Hey there........by saying "Howdy" I take it you're Southern, like me (Alabama)......
From all the discussion here, i've gleaned that NO Blackstar amps are self biasing........but you wouldn't need to re-bias after a pre-amp tube swap(12AX7A/Ecc83) anyhow, just for power tubes (the 12BH7A).
Look further down the thread list and you'll find several discussions on this very topic.

And, Welcome to the forum !!

Tung Sol preamp tube sounds great in this amp. Worth getting rid of the Sovtek. Kept the EH powertube in.

BTW, I put JJ 12AX7's in my old Peavy amp and it made it sound too dark and muffled. Not sure how it would sound in this amp.

I've tried an alternate Sovtek, Shuguang, EH, Tung-Sol, and old pre amp tubes in the HT-5 They all have very subtle differences. The vintage Telefunken and Raytheon sounded good, but make more difference in other amps I have so they'll go to a different home. I'm going to stay with a new Tung Sol for now, but I am definitely going to play with the power tube in this amp. I purchased a late 50's RCA and Tung Sol 12BH7A to check out but haven't had a chance. I'm still looking for accurate bias setting info too.

I just got a Tung Sol Gold, and it was a noticeable improvement in overall tone, specially bass and mids, I always thought of the sovtek as very harsh on the highs, I just got it where I wanted. I'm plugging into a custom made 1x12 Vintage 30 that I just built, and I play a 74 Strat with HS3's, an Epiphone Les Paul Standard 1959 limited edition, and Ibanez Prestige 1570 with Evolution pickups, and even my Peavey T-15 sounds amazing. But even before changing any tubes, I highly recommend getting a decent speaker cabinet.

I just swapped out the stock 12ax7 with a Tung Sol 12ax7. To my ears there was a difference in the overall tone, a little brighter, less muddy sound. I got the tube from tubedepot.com and went with the hi-gain test option, not sure if that makes a difference, but I figured I'd try it out.
