Correct. Most condenser mics require 48v of phantom power to function, which is why it's not working. You can use a microphones for live vocals with a guitar amp, but it has to be a mic that does not require phantom power. Obviously the person you bought it from either has no idea what they are talking about and/or were just trying to sell you a higher dollar item. You would have been better off with a $99 SM57...not a $200+ Rode.

The question asked previously is still valid though....why? Sure you can use a mic with a guitar amp in a pinch to amplify live vocals, but it's not an ideal solution...nor is the use of an NT-1 in a live situation. It's just too fragile a mic.
